Typical Milestones in Speech and Language Development

While children develop at different rates and environmental influences can have a big impact on speech development in children, if yours doesn’t appear to follow a typical language development timeline it might be worth consulting a speech pathologist for children:

Newborn – 1 Year

0-3 Months

Newborn to 1 Year Infants will startle when exposed to loud sounds but settle when hearing familiar voices; each infant cries differently for different needs and within three months of life will have learned cooing sounds and learned to smile!

4-6 Months

At around six to twelve months, babies start responding to sounds they hear by looking in the direction of them and responding to changes in your voice tone. At this age they also begin giggling and babble different consonant sounds such as “pa” or “da”.

7 – 12 Months

Babies will begin turning toward sounds and responding to their names, following points, understanding familiar words (milk, dad and car) and playing “peek a boo”. Around 12 months they may begin stringing sounds together (“babababa”) as well as using gestures and sounds to get your attention. Around one year of age they should begin using single words like “hi” and “Mama”, although sounds may not yet be clear.

Observing your baby’s speech development milestones may reveal any deficiencies; in such a case, booking an initial speech therapy session to discuss these concerns could prove invaluable.

1 – 2 Years

By 12-18 months, children begin using more single words and looking at you when speaking, while also beginning to point at body parts or items in books that they recognize. Around 18-24 months, they start combining two words (“more milk”) together when speaking or asking simple questions (“What’s that?”) or following simple directions (“Roll the ball!”).

If you have concerns about your child’s speech development or language skills, do not hesitate to seek the support of a speech pathologist. Early intervention is key!

2 – 4 Years

By age 3, most children can speak in two- or three-word phrases with an impressive vocabulary of more than 300 words, such as understanding location words like “on” and “in”. Additionally, they begin following simple two step directions such as “get the cow and put him in the barn”. Furthermore, many can narrate a short tale about their day around this age.

By age 4, strangers typically can understand most of what a child says (although some speech sound errors may still be age appropriate). At this stage, children can ask and answer simple questions, participate in conversations, and use adult-like grammar.

Whether your concerns relate to speech delay or disorder or they don’t meet milestones for language development, a speech therapist can identify areas that support communication skills during a therapy session!

Q- Will a special diet aid my child’s speech abilities? A- It could certainly improve these.

A- Beginning from birth, feeding your child a diet rich in proteins, carbohydrates, fats, mineral salts and vitamins can have profoundly positive impacts on both his/her physical as well as mental development.

Question: What are Speech Sound Disorders?

A- Children typically acquire language by listening to others say sounds. There may be certain sounds acquired earlier and others later; for instance, small children might say “tat” instead of “cat” and “wing” instead of “ring”, but as they grow they should eventually pick up on how to say them correctly.

Children may find learning the correct pronunciation of speech sounds challenging. Some may struggle with pronouncing just one or more sounds while others have difficulty with multiple sounds; such children are considered to have a speech sound disorder.

Q- How can I assist a child in learning to pronounce and say new sounds during conversation?

A- Once your child learns to pronounce speech sounds correctly in single words and sentences, you should help him generalize this skill so he uses it during conversational speech too.

Question: We offer online speech therapy assistance.

Q- If I suspect my child has hearing loss, what should be my next steps?

A: Early intervention can be the key to combatting hearing loss among children. A good way to test this is standing behind them while they make noise or when distracted, and listening for any responses or only responding to loud sounds; if these do not show, or only respond in certain volumes it may be time for an audiologist hearing evaluation.

Audiologists are trained professionals who can evaluate a child’s hearing and diagnose any potential issues. If necessary, they may suggest treatments such as hearing aids or cochlear implants as viable treatment solutions. If you suspect your child may be suffering from hearing loss, speaking to their paediatrician or family doctor is key in order to be referred to an audiologist for further evaluation.

Q- Do you offer speech therapy to adults?

A- We do offer online speech therapy for adults who suffer from speech, language and voice disorders. You can read more here.

Q- How can someone benefit from Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)?

A- ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) can be defined as the practice of employing behavioral principles to modify specific behaviors while measuring its efficacy simultaneously. ABA interventions often focus on altering physical environments or situations which lead to and sustain abnormal behaviors.
